Orienteering challenges both your navigational skills and your ability to physically move quickly through the forest. In order to provide appropriate courses for everyone most orienteering events have a vast matrix of categories to choose from, providing a range of combinations of technical difficulty and physical challenge - from short with easy navigation to long with difficult navigation and most combinations in between.

Your first challenge when signing up for an orienteering race is to pick the appropriate category for you. Adding complexity keep in mind that each race at Barebones will have a different set of categories to choose from:
  • Urban-O : this is a fun event and we'll make up some fun categories. See the options on the online registration page.
  • Setup & Chase and Farsta:  We will use ageless categories for everyone, so you pick the combination of physical/navigational challenge you want.
  • THOMASS: There is only one category in the THOMASS, and everyone gets a handicap based on age/gender/experience. See race details for more information.

Technical difficulty

TD1: Very easy. All controls on man-made "handrails", such as paths, fences, powerlines.
TD2: Easy. All controls on natural or man-made handrails, including streams, edge of clearings, etc
TD3: Controls on large features close to handrails.
TD4: Controls on large features in the forest.
TD5: Controls on small features in the forest, rugged terrain.
