Barebones 2014 results, photos, and course maps - see the "RESULTS" tab

Thanks for all of the skiers that took part in the three ski orienteering races at the Canmore Nordic Centre. We had competitors from Salmon Arm, Edmonton, Cranbrook, Calgary, and of course Canmore. There were three races, each very different not only in terms of orienteering course design, but also in snow and weather conditions.

Friday Night's Sprint - was a very fast race, with quick route choices required and lots of technical skiing - cutting through the trees, skiing down summer bike trails, and lots of transitions between fast and slow snow.  Temperatures were warm so the snow was granular corn snow or crunchy and icy. The course started high above the stadium and the overall downhill nature, along with the short distance allowed skiers to go at full throttle the entire race.

Saturday's Long course - was a physical test with lots of climbing, long distances, and some quite complex route choices. The early morning start meant that the freshly groomed trails were slick and very, very fast. This meant that ski-ing around was often just as good if not better than short-cuts through the trees.

Sunday's THOMASS course - was a head-to-head competition in which racers were handicapped based on age, gender, and skiing speed.  Snow conditions were exceptionally difficult, with 3cm of heavy wet snow on the trails. It was a tough, tough ski but racers finished the course with tired smiles.

Thank you to everyone that made the trip. Thanks to the staff at the Canmore Nordic Centre for being so supportive of orienteering. And thanks to the volunteers that helped put on the weekend:
  • Teresa - kids' course designer
  • Adrian - adults' course designer
  • Jean - registration
  • Magali, Farshad, Robert - first aid
  • Robert - photos
  • Charlotte - control pickup planning
  • Jo Ellen - timing

This, the 19th annual Barebones weekend, will be the first Barebones weekend entirely on snow. We have planned three ski orienteering races and some of the usual extra-curricular activities. There will be lots of exciting head to head racing, including  a mass start race, a long distance race, and a Sprint race. As always with Barebones you are guaranteed:
  • Well designed race courses
  • Appropriate for all levels - beginners to superstars, young gazelles to grizzly old vets
  • Great socializing
  • And of course the you-can-never-get-tired-of-it stupendous scenery of the Rocky Mountains all weekend.
